According to my resources, there is no such national holiday as Presidents’ Day. (See, for example the informative article at Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/holidays/presidents/presidents.asp.) There is, however, an official Federal holiday known as George Washington’s Birthday. Why does it matter? I suspect that very few, if any, Americans would cringe at the thought of celebrating the legacy and contribution of George Washington. But I’m virtually certain that all of us can think of more than one President that we’d just as soon forget. While not wanting to detract from the dignity of the office itself, we certainly wouldn’t want to dignify their time in office with an annual celebration. I know I can think of at least two in my lifetime.
